Ubuntu Edge Smartphone project up for funding

Canonical have unveiled the Ubuntu edge smartphone. The device has some unique specifications including the dual booting feature. The device dual boots Android and Ubuntu operating systems. It can also be converted to a desktop pc when docked.

Ubuntu claims that the phone can be turned in to a PC any where you can find an HDMI display. With all those specifications the phone can perform as good as any normal desktop PC.



Canonical will start the production of phones once they source the 32 million dollar funding for the project before 21st August 2013. It is up for funding at indiegogo, where they have already received a commitment of over 3 million dollar with 30 days to go before the closing.

This project, as the Ubuntu calls it, is made using cutting edge technologies available. The phone will be powered using the fastest available quad core processor and 4 GB RAM. As mention above it runs on dual operating systems and can be turned into a PC when docked. The display is 4.5 inch 1,280 x 720 HD sapphire crystal display. Ubuntu edge will have an 8 MP rear camera and 2 MP shooter in the front. Connectivity options includes Dual-LTE, dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4 and NFC.

Other features includes Stereo speakers with HD audio, dual-mic recording and Active Noise Cancellation . There will be 3.5mm jack and MHL connector. Dimensions of the phone are 64 x 9 x 124mm within which it packs a Silicon-anode Li-Ion battery. Besides there will be GPS, accelerometer, gyro, proximity sensor, compass and barometer.
