Microsoft has a predilection in making new versions of their OS. Each version is updated with the introduction of some outstanding features. The basic version of the Windows 7 which is a stater version is available in some cheap netbooks. The dominant feature of Windows 7 is the sharing of wireless connection with other machines which according to Microsoft is available only in higher versions..
But now the wireless networking feature is digged out from Windows 7 starting version. With this feature a user can connect and share a single networking connection from mobile WiFi or broadband connection.
According to Rafael Rivera the missing of the ad-hoc icon service does not mean that the facility is not available in the starter edition. Even though the icon is missing the feature is available and active in the Starter edition. You can reach there by searching 'adhoc' from the start menu and then launch the feature. Expect Microsoft will close this loophole in the updated versions.
