Google announced the biking direction feature in Google Maps. The feature is now available for desktop version only. But Google is also planning this feature for the mobile version too.
Google says that millions of bikers were requesting for biking directions in Google Maps and the most requested feature is now available in Google Maps. The feature is currently available in US only. You can expect the feature to be available across the world soon in the future.
The new feature provides a step by step direction for bicycling, bike trails, and also a Bicycling layer which will offer the users the details about bike trails, bike friendly roads etc. The bike-specific routing suggestions is a feature which is almost same as the directions provided by public transit mode, walking, driving etc.
You just need to enter the staring point and destination you want to reach and change the mode to bicycling then you will get the route which is optimized for biking. The bicycling layer uses color in a different manner to indicate the three different kind of paths. Dark green for bike-only trail, where as light green and dotted green provides the informations about dedicated bike lanes along road and roads without bike lanes, but which are appropriate for biking respectively.
The video provided below is a preview and you can just try this new feature here in your desktop until it is available in mobiles.
