NVIDIA Launches Tegra 4i LTE Processor As A Qualcomm Killer?

Last month at CES, NVIDIA introduced their latest mobile processor, the Tegra 4 and now the American semi conductor makers are adding one more processor to their Tegra 4 line up. The newly introduced Tegra 4i, is their first fully integrated 4G LTE mobile processor, particularly designed for smartphones, to take on with  their rivals in mobile space, especially Qualcomm’s processor . The chip offers extremely faster processing power, that also with half the half the size of its competitors. Literally the Tegra 4i is a follower of Tegra 4, but functionally of it is more like a heavily upgraded Tegra 3.

Code named as 'Project Grey,  Tegra 4i processor follows their previous  design architecture,  and it offers the same 4 cores + 1 battery saver core architecture, in that the four cores takes the heavy work load and the battery saver core is responsible for those low-intensity tasks and states. More precisely it features  60 custom NVIDIA GPU cores, a quad-core CPU based on ARM's R4 Cortex-A9 CPU, and its 60-core GPU is almost closer to the Tegra 4 72-core graphics accelerator, in performance. More than that the choice of Cortex A9 , than the Cortex A15 in the Tegra 4 makes it to reduce the power consumption and size considerably. When the Tegra 4 measures around 80mm^2, the newer one Tegra 4i tips the scale at 60mm^2, even with integrated baseband.

As we said, the 2.3 GHz quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 4i is coming with Icera i500 baseband IP block, and the new ‘soft-modem’ can be re-programmed over-the-air to support new frequencies and air interfaces.

Apart from that Nvidia have also included their Computational Photography Architecture, that is already present in Tegra 4, offers "the world’s first" always-on HDR capabilities, ‘tap to track’ functionality, and the first panoramic photos with HDR.

Nvidia's Tegra 4 processor supposed to start their shipping by the end of 2013, and most probably we can see the handsets with the processor by the beginning of next year itself.
